A high school English teacher is making news due to some unhappy parents.
Judy Buranich has been teaching at Pennsylvania Midd West High School for almost 25 years. She also happens to be a published author on the side, writing erotic romance novels under the pen name of Judy Mays.
Wendy Apple, the mother of one of Judy’s students, complained, “Now my son knows, so how is he thinking when he’s sitting in her class knowing what she does on the side?”
Another parent, Deanna Stepp, declared, “She is teaching children that are under the age of 18 and definitely the books that she is writing are adult books. I think she needs to make a decision as to what she wants to do. Either be a school teacher or author.”
“I was shocked. If you are a teacher, you shouldn’t be doing that,” quipped former student Shanette Apple.
I was shocked too; I can’t believe people actually have a problem with this. Have we suddenly been transported back in time to the puritan Victorian era? Ladies, you better cover up those ankles or risk being arrested for indecency.
Thankfully, these judgmental and unreasonable prudes are a minority and there has been an outpouring of support for Mrs. Buranich on Youtube and Facebook.
Mrs. Buranich does not mention her other career or teach erotica in her classroom and has a right to have a separate private life. Also, how many students get to learn English composition from a published, successful author? Not many.
Not surprisingly, since there is a lot of shame, guilt, and fear in our society surrounding sex and sexuality, many people are unaware that they’re harboring such internal conflicts. Are you one of them?
