Does divorce cause negative karma? A common belief in many countries throughout the world is that divorce is to be avoided at all costs.
For example, in Swazi, a country in southern Africa, King Mswati recently said the following: “We urge the Samuels to be together until death does them apart because according to our customs and traditions, once a couple gets married the traditional way, nothing can undo that marriage. Only death can undo that marriage. There is no divorce; that is unknown to us. Once we do it the Swazi way and complete the whole marriage process then it becomes a done deal.”
The king made this announcement during the “paying of a bride price” for one of King Sobhuza II’s daughters, Princess Khetsiwe.
I don’t know about you, but I’m very grateful that I was born (this time) in a country and period when women are not seen as objects to be purchased for marriage (aside from those who are overly focused on money and actively seek out such an arrangement), and that the current marriage traditions in the USA encourage a little less suffering.
Divorce is never easy, but a friendly divorce is possible. If it’s uncontested and the couple agrees upon a few major issues, they can move on for as little as $299 with the legal documents at Legal Zoom. You can also do it yourself for less money with this guide.
Does divorce cause negative karma? Based on my reincarnation, life-between-life, and metaphysical empirical research over the last 25 years, I’ve found that it depends how you react to the situation.
Since marriage is a legally-binding business contract, not a spiritual one (even a religious marriage ceremony is still based on earthbound thinking and is not really ordained by God or any other being from the other side), the act of divorce or leaving someone by itself does not create negative karma. In many cases it’s difficult to divorce without causing negative karma, but as long as you’re fair, honest, and civil during the process, you should be fine.
