Supporters of a same-sex marriage ban use the argument that traditional marriage has always been between one man and one woman.
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb, who recently struck down Wisconsin’s gay marriage ban, disagrees:
“As an initial matter, defendants and amici have overstated their argument. Throughout history, the most ‘traditional’ form of marriage has not been between one man and one woman, but between one man and multiple women, which presumably is not a tradition that defendants and amici would like to continue. Like moral disapproval, tradition alone proves nothing more than a state’s desire to prohibit particular conduct.”
Crabb also noted that tradition was used as an excuse to prevent women from voting.
If you objectively review the history of marriage, you’ll find that Crabb is correct: Men had multiple wives, and those who had more material resources had the most wives and mistresses. In some cultures, women had multiple partners.
Most marriages were not for love, but for convenience or economic gain. Only in recent times has the one man-one-woman-love-only-you-forever model been the prevailing standard. Considering the 50% plus divorce and 50% plus cheating rates, it might be time to consider other alternatives.
