“Spiritual practices help us move from identifying with the ego to identifying with the soul. Old age does that for you too. It spiritualizes people naturally.” ~ Ram Dass

Ever caught yourself in a heated argument… with yourself? Don’t worry because it’s fairly common. Those different voices in your head can be your ego and soul playing tug-of-war with your decision-making process. Let’s dive into this internal battle and look at who is in the zoo of your mind.
Understanding the Voices
The ego is like that friend who’s always in panic mode. It operates from a place of fear and scarcity, constantly worrying about past mistakes or future disasters. It’s the voice that needs everyone’s approval and tends to shout its opinions like an overexcited sports fan. If your inner voice is giving you a highly critical running commentary, that’s probably your ego talking.
Critical voices in your head can also be attached lost souls; their bodies died, but they didn’t go to the Light for various reasons. Use my free and easy Spiritual Detox script to clear your energy.
In contrast, your soul voice is more like that wise grandparent who’s seen it all and keeps their cool. It speaks with the quiet confidence of someone who knows that everything will work out in its own time. While your ego is running around like a chicken with its head cut off, your soul is sipping tea and nodding sagely in the corner.
Common Ego Traps to Watch For
Ever find yourself scrolling through social media and comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel? That’s your ego in comparison mode. It’s the master of making you feel like you’re not measuring up, turning life into an endless competition where the finish line keeps moving.
The ego is also that control freak who thinks it can plan every minute of the future. It’s good to strive for goals, but sometimes fate has other plans for you. And don’t get me started on its endless quest for validation through social media posts.
Signs You’re Hearing Soul Wisdom
When your soul is in the driver’s seat, you’ll feel a sense of peace. Intuitive flashes are wisdom from your soul. For example, you think of an old friend and they email you that day. That’s not your ego; it’s soul magic at work.
Integration Techniques
Mindful observation is watching your thoughts float by like clouds, but not getting caught up in the storm. Detached acceptance. Or try saying, in your mind, “cancel, cancel, cancel” when your ego is spouting off nonsense.
Pause each day and check in with yourself. Which voice is louder? Is your ego running around like a squirrel after drinking espresso, or can you hear your soul’s gentle guidance through the noise?
If your mind is too restless, it’s time to meditate. Meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting in lotus position for an hour. Sometimes it’s just taking five minutes in your car before work to breathe and center yourself.
Body awareness is crucial. Your body is like a personal GPS for truth. If something feels off, your gut will let you know before your mind catches up. It’s like having a built-in BS detector.
Don’t try to completely silence the ego. That never works. Instead, aim for acceptance and harmony. Think of your ego as an overprotective parent and your soul as the cool grandparent who helps you see the bigger picture.
Learning to distinguish between ego and soul guidance is like developing a superpower; you’ll make better decisions and live with more peace.
Remember: if the voice in your head sounds like an overly caffeinated stock trader on Wall Street, that’s your ego talking. If it’s more like a wise old lighthouse keeper who’s seen a thousand storms come and go, that’s your soul.
