You’ve probably run into teachings, messages, or people who seemed full of “Light” on the surface… but something felt off. Perhaps the words sounded deep, but the energy behind them didn’t sit right. Maybe you felt pressured instead of empowered. Or maybe you walked away more confused than uplifted.
In a world full of spiritual content (some solid, some questionable), discernment is one of the most important skills you can develop. Below, I discuss how to recognize what’s truly of the Light, how to spot false-light teachings without fear, and how to stay grounded in the truth.
What “False Light” Is
The term “false light” is anything that looks spiritual on the outside but leaves you feeling disempowered on the inside.
Some examples include teachings that use fancy language but subtly encourage fear, a group that promises “higher knowledge” but relies on control or elitism, and someone who genuinely means well but is speaking from their ego instead of true inner alignment.
False light isn’t always malicious; it is often just misaligned and has the shiny veneer of wisdom without the grounded, compassionate substance behind it.
Real Light is steady, supportive, and freeing.
True Light vs. False Light: The Energetic Difference
One way to discern truth is by how it feels.
True Light feels peaceful, grounded, and expansive. Even if it challenges you or asks you to grow, there’s a sense of clarity and calm. You should feel empowered, not pressured.
False light, on the other hand, often feels tight or urgent. There’s usually an emotional charge behind it, such as fear, pressure, guilt, or superiority. You might feel confused, drained, or dependent on the teacher or message afterward.
True Light allows you to breathe deeper. False light subtly contracts your energy.
Your intuition already knows the difference. You just need to learn to trust it.
True Light Example: “Souls choose to reincarnate into challenging situations.” Even though people who don’t understand reincarnation may not like the way that statement “feels” to them initially, once they understand more, it’s empowering.
False Light Example: “You’ll be denied access to heaven if you don’t follow our teachings.”
Common Spiritual Red Flags (Without Getting Paranoid)
Discernment is about noticing red flags when they show up.
For example, a big red flag is when someone claims to be the “only true channel” or insists their path or religion is the only correct one. Another is when you’re discouraged from thinking critically or asking questions.
If you ever walk away from a message feeling smaller, more confused, or more dependent, that’s a sign it may not be aligned with true Light.
Healthy spirituality encourages independence, not obedience. It helps you return to yourself, not hand your power away.
How to Discern Without Becoming Cynical
Not everything “spiritual” is actually helpful. Discernment is clarity, not cynicism. You can absolutely stay open, curious, and loving while also being wise, asking questions, and trusting your body. You can walk away from teachings that don’t resonate without labeling them as “bad.”
A Simple Discernment Process
Whenever you’re unsure about a spiritual message, teacher, group, or experience, try this:
First, pause. Don’t respond to the initial emotional hit. Take a breath and step back.
Ask yourself if you have all the information about the subject you need to make an informed decision. If not, dig deeper.
Next, tune into your body. Does this feel calming, or does it stir anxiety? Truth usually brings clarity; fear brings static.
Then ask yourself a few honest questions: Who benefits if I believe this? Is this pushing me into fear or into empowerment? Does this message honor my free will? Does it respect my ability to think?
After that, ask for higher clarity. Talk to God, ask your angels, your guides, or the Light to show you the truth behind the subject. Then let it unfold. Often the answer arrives quietly, in a shift of insight, a sign, or a feeling that settles in.
Finally, observe actions. Words are easy; energy and behavior tell the real story.
Discernment in Real Spiritual Situations
Channeled messages, for example, should feel loving, clear, and respectful of your sovereignty. If a message feels fear-driven, smug, or controlling, step back and reassess.
Teachers or groups should encourage your independence, not create dependency. If the energy feels heavy or hierarchical, that’s a cue to trust your intuition.
And even with your own intuitive hits, pause and check whether the message comes from quiet knowing or emotions. Fear can disguise itself as intuition. Discernment bridges the two.
How to Strengthen Your Discernment
Discernment grows with practice, just like intuition.
Journaling helps you notice what resonates and what feels off. Spending time in silence helps you sense the truth. Asking for divine clarity brings alignment. Avoiding drugs and excess alcohol, and staying grounded through nature, meditation, or mindful breathing keeps your perception clear. Cultivating self-trust allows your intuition to speak more loudly than doubt.
The more you practice, the quicker you’ll sense the difference between truth and illusion.
True Light Always Leads You Back to Yourself
At the heart of all discernment is this: real Light never asks you to give up your power. It never demands blind loyalty or fear-based obedience. It never confuses or belittles you.
True Light brings clarity. It supports your sovereignty. It deepens your connection to God, your guides, and your own soul. It feels like freedom, peace, and alignment.
You already have everything you need to discern what’s true. You’re not learning from scratch; you’re remembering. And every time you choose clarity over confusion and empowerment over pressure, you grow stronger in that remembrance.
Your Light knows the way. Discernment simply helps you walk in it with confidence.
