“What you’re really supposed to be doing is whatever makes your heart sing.” Barbara Sher
Paying attention to what makes your heart sing isn’t just about chasing fleeting moments of pleasure; it’s about living a life that’s true to you. This little voice can guide you toward the right career, better relationships, and much more.
But let’s not get carried away—common sense is crucial because not everything that feels good is good for you. In this post, I’ll discuss how listening to your heart can positively impact various aspects of your life, the pitfalls of ignoring it, and how to balance it all with practical wisdom.
Career
Your career takes up a huge chunk of your life, so why not make it something you love, or at least like? Your gut feelings often point you toward what you’re good at and what you’d enjoy doing.
Balancing Passion and Practicality
Pursuing dreams is admirable, but you still need to pay your bills. If you’re an aspiring artist but can’t make ends meet, perhaps you’d enjoy a related career to supplement your income like graphic design or teaching art.
Money
Yes, money matters, but chasing big paychecks without considering what makes your heart sing (aside from money) will lead to burnout, dissatisfaction, and a lifetime of “what ifs.”
Love and Intuitive Connections
Intuition plays a huge role in finding deep, meaningful connections. Ignoring your heart can lead to dull, forced relationships. Trust that inner voice when it comes to choosing a partner.
Balancing Heart and Mind
But sometimes your heart singing about a relationship might blind you to red flags. Being too impulsive can land you in toxic situations. And let’s be real—relationships need more than just feelings. Infatuation and looks fade. Balance your emotions with some good old common sense to build healthy relationships.
Family: Navigating Expectations and Staying True to Yourself
Family can be a big source of pressure, wanting you to follow a certain path or be someone you’re not. But it’s important to honor your own journey because it’s your life, not theirs. Don’t “should” on yourself.
Friends: Choosing Your Circle Wisely
Friends have a big impact on your life. Stick with people who support and encourage your passions, and do the same for them. Let go of those who drain your energy or discourage your dreams.
Common Sense and Discernment: Avoiding Misguided Desires
Not everything that feels good is good for you. Ice cream might make your heart sing, but eating it with every meal isn’t healthy. Use common sense to make choices that are good for you. Think about the long-term impacts of your choices. Are they sustainable? That new job or relationship might bring immediate satisfaction, but consider if it aligns with your core values and long-term goals.
Consequences of Ignoring Your Heart
Ignoring what makes your heart sing can lead to regret, unhappiness, feeling stuck, stress, and depression. Prioritizing what you “should” do over what you love can take a serious toll on your mental and emotional well-being.
Think about a time you did what was expected of you, but then eventually accepted it wasn’t in your best interest. You probably experienced inner turmoil, and then finally liberation once you followed your heart instead.
Live Authentically
Listening to what makes your heart sing is about more than just chasing happiness—it’s about living authentically, acting with integrity, thinking for yourself, asking tough questions, and fulfilling your potential.
One of the worst things you can do in life is ignore the signs you perceive. Life will be harder.
Make your life easier by following the light, or what makes your heart sing, and the signs from the universe, with courage and common sense.
