The term is most often used to describe an ideal love relationship partner.
The spiritual definition is different. As I wrote about in my book Your Love Life and Reincarnation, a soul mate is someone you’ve known in past lives, and you reunite to help one another. The assistance can be in positive or negative ways, and it usually results in learning and growth, which is the main purpose for incarnating.
A common misconception about soul mates is that you only have one. This is unfortunate because so many people believe that since they’ve lost “THE ONE,” that’s it, their love life is over. My findings show that while some soul mates are more compatible, everyone has many.
I’ve also found that while you can react to fate and make the most of your life, you cannot “manifest” an ideal soul mate unless it’s destined for you during that period of your life, no matter what metaphysical techniques you use or beliefs you hold. Those who sell such snake oil give false hope and cause more love life misery.
“A soulmate is an ongoing connection with another individual that the soul picks up again in various times and places over lifetimes. We are attracted to another person at a soul level not because that person is our unique complement, but because by being with that individual, we are somehow provided with an impetus to become whole ourselves.” ~Edgar Cayce
“If you want to attract a life partner as your soul mate, there are several illusions you will need to relinquish. One is that your soul mate is someone you will be with for the rest of your life. You can have a soul mate relationship that lasts a few weeks, months, or years. Time has nothing to do with the quality of your connection and its importance in your life.” ~Sanaya Roman
